Srisailam dam reservoir full, water level 895 ft

Srisailam dam now is full of water, 10 ft above its maximum level (885 ft ). It is a very rare and dangerous situation to the Srisailam dam. As per latest information about 2 lakhs cusecs water coming from Almatty dam of Karnataka from Tungabhadra river. At present the Srisailam dam is already filled up and releasing water though its all crest gates. But because of heavy incoming floods, it seems to be water will over come the dam height and flow from above the dam. The Back waters of Srisailam dam already caused a massive destruction in Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts. These photos and vedio show the latest situation of Krishna river at Srisailam dam.

Srisailam dam crust gates lifted

Srisailam dam crust gates lifted up on 10th september 2009. Andhra pradesh State Irrigation department Minister Sri Ponna Lakshmayya lifted up two crust gates of N.S.R.S project [ Nilam Sanjiva Reddy Sagar Project], as it reached to its full capacity, i.e. 885 fts. Now, there is a lot of incoming water coming from Tungabhadra, a tributary of Krishna river. Many tourists coming to Srisailam will see the Project in their trip. Some Ecotourists are also coming to Srisailam to see it. This is the correct time in this year to see the Project. Akka mahadevi caves is one of the must see place in Srisailam. A great lady devotee of Lord Mallikarjuna swamy, named Akka mahadevi did tapsya here. These caves are about 16 kms away from Srisailam. We have to go in boat to reach here, A.P tourism is maintaining boat services to see this place. These caves are formed naturally about one lack years ago. 

Akka mahadevi is a great devotee of Lord Shiva, she came from Karnataka state. She did tapasya here for about 100 years. The journey to Akka mahadevi caves is very joyful and we will see beauty of Krishna river and Nallamala forest in this journey. 
After reaching the caves we have to go for about 50 to 60 feet in to the caves with candle lighting. After that we will see a small Shiva linga in that cave. There are 2 to 3 caves here. Above the caves there is a small Ashram. The swamy of that ashram is now living in Beedear, and he will come here on every Karthika pournami.

Photos of Shivaratri festival in Srisailam

Shivaratri is an important and famous festival of Lord Shiva. It comes in Magha masa krishna chaturdasi, i.e, generally in the months of February or March of every year. This is one day festival of Lord shiva. He likes this festival very much, and he fulfills all the desires to the person who does Upavasa [fasting] and Jagaram [spending all night without sleep] in this day.

Shivaratri is very important in all the temples of Lord shiva. In Srisailam also Lakhs of people will come to the temple and get blessings of Mallikarjuna swamy and Bhramaramba devi. Brahmotsavas will be conducted by Devasthanam in these days. On the day of Shiva ratri, at the time of Lingodbhava [Mid night], a person will climb upon the temple and tie the Alaya sikhara with eight Nandis around it, using a white cloth. This is called as 'Paga'. Seeing this is called as 'Paga darsanam / Paga darshan', and it is vey holy. After the day of Shivaratri, devasthanam will conduct Radhotsavam of Mallikajunaswamy. This is locally called as 'Teru'. This is the final part of Shivaratri festival in Srisailam.

Lord Shiva and Parvathi is in the form of Mallikarjuna swamy and Bhramaramba devi.

Bhimunikolanu is an important place in Srisailam. It is about 10kms away from Srisailam. It is an important halting place in the journey of Srisailam, in Forest. When Pandavas came to Srisailam, Droupadi gets thirsty, but there is no water to drink. Then Bhima gets irritation and hits the hill with his Gada, Water came out with this stroke. Hence the name Bhimuni kolanu.

Photos of Kailasa dwaram

Kailasa dwaram is another important place in Srisailam. People come from Karnataka and Rayalaseema on foot in forest root. Lakhs of people will come in this route at the time of Shivaratri and Ugadi. They walk through hundreds of kilometers to reach Srisailam. It shows their devotion towards Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy.



The forest route is about 45 kilometers, and it starts from Venkatapuram, a small village near Atmakur, Kurnool district. The first point to see in their route is Nagaluti, Lord Veerabhadraswamy is the diety here. After travelling 20kms they reach peddacheruvu. People stay here at night time. After that they come to Bhimuni kolanu. It is about 20kms away from peddacheruvu. This is another spot where people used to stay night time in their journey. From Bhimuni kolanu people have to climb hill to reach Kailasa dwaram. People feel happy when they reach this place and think that they have reached Srisailam, that is Bhuloka kailasam. Hence the name Kailasa dwaram. Previously there is a Gateway in this place, but it was demolished. Now Karnataka people are constructing a new Gateway in this place, with sculptures of Bhima and Arjuna. Pilgrims will perform Annadana [give free meals] here every year at the time of Shiva ratri.

Photos of Phaladhara panchadhara

Phaldhara panchadhara is anther major tourist area in srisailam. Adishankarachrya did tapsya here, and he wrote Shivanandalahari. Here there is a continuous waterfalls, which comes from hills. The water fall is in the form of five parts. hence the name Panchadhara. People belive that water comes from forehead of Lord Shiva. Hence the name Phaladhara. Here there is a small temple of Jagadguru Adishankaracharya swamy. Water from this waterfalls are used in Sakshiganapathi temple and Hatakeswaram temple.
